Greek Mythology: From The Iliad To The Fall Of The Last Tyrant

Pillars of Herakles
The stone outcropping in southern Spain that we know as Gibraltar and the African mountain, Jebel Musa (Gebel Musa), were called the Pillars of Herakles by the ancient Greeks. The two landmarks distinctly separated the Atlantic Ocean from the Mediterranean Sea. Gibraltar was named Kalpe and Jebel Musa was named Abyla.
Gibraltar is 1,396 feet (426 meters) in height and Jebel Musa is 2,775 feet (846 meters).
