Greek Mythology: From The Iliad To The Fall Of The Last Tyrant

Epidaurus

Epidaurus is located on the Peloponnesian Peninsula in the district of Argolis ... in ancient times, it was a center for healing and rejuvenation dedicated to Asklepios (Asclepius). The site consists of a ruined circular temple and one of the most impressive amphitheatres in Greece ... the theatre sits on a hill overlooking the ruined temple with a panoramic view of the hilly countryside. While I was there (September 2006) a man stood at the center of the amphitheatre’s stage and gave an impressive recitation of a passage from one of Euripides’ plays ... I was sitting on the top row and could hear every nuance clearly. The plays presented at the theatre and the staff at the temple were wholly committed to healing the sick and promoting good health ... treatments included: prayer, medicines and physical therapy.
