The sheer walls of the Acropolis are daunting ... the only real weakness to the structure was the wooden gates at the main entryway ... when the Persians attacked Athens in 480 BCE, they burned the gates and stormed the Acropolis. This is a view from the northern side ... the jagged rocks in the foreground housed small caves dedicated to the gods Zeus and Pan.
