I took this picture in the Reading Room of the museum of a replica of the Rosetta Stone. The real Rosetta Stone was difficult to photograph because of the reflections from glass case which protects it. I was very fortunate to be included in a special Rosetta Stone tour conducted by one of the museum curators … he gave us an incredibly informative lecture about the Rosetta Stone, its importance, history, and treatment since it arrived at the British Museum. When the museum first acquired this priceless artifact, the museum curators wanted to mount the Rosetta Stone on a stand so it could be put on display … they actually cut notches into the back of the stone to facilitate the mounting process. Needless to say, that type of behavior is appalling by modern standards.
