The Nereid Monument of Xanthos

This monumental tomb is from Xanthos in what is now southern Turkey. The ruins of the ancient site were discovered in the mid-eighteen hundreds by Charles Fellows. His initial reports of the site were greeted with enthusiasm and the Nereid Monument was eventually brought to the museum. The tomb is from the time of the Persian domination of the area circa 546 BCE but the Greek architectural influence is obvious.
