By far, the most popular image from ancient Greece is that of the Gorgons. Their ugly faces are on everything from vases to shields. They inspired fear in any sensible person because of their hideous, snake-wreathed faces and foreboding eyes. No one ever looked on the face of a Gorgon and lived … perhaps that is why they were given such a place of honor by the ancient artists.
