The Iliad and the Odyssey are epic poems describing the Trojan War and Odysseus's harrowing trip home after the war. The Iliad and the Odyssey were followed by a series of less ambitious works that became known as the Epic Cycle.
The extant fragments of the Epic Cycle are important because they elaborate on events that happened before and after the Trojan War but were not fully discussed in the Iliad and the Odyssey. The Epic Cycle is sometimes called the Trojan Cycle.
