The Temple of Zeus is located in downtown Athens ... my first look at these glorious ruins was from the ramparts of the Acropolis ... looking down on the ruins of this once grand structure is nothing less than awe inspiring!
The columns that are still standing represent a mere ten percent of the original building ... there is virtually nothing left of the support buildings that once surrounded the temple and the grounds have been reduced to sparse grass and sand. We can only imagine the way this wonderful building must have looked in antiquity ... the towering façade ... the lush vegetation ... the hubbub of numerous worker and functionaries ... this was probably more of a home for Zeus than a temple for the worshipers.
