Mykenai is located on the Peloponnesian Peninsula in the district of Argos. The culture and art of the Mykenains was so distinct that it is generally given a separate classification rather than being given the generic classification of simply Greek. Mykenai is best known as the kingdom of Agamemnon . . . all that remains of Mykenai is a ruined fortress and the beehive-shaped Treasury of Atreus. The ruined city is entered through the Lions Gates and the circular graves found in the city have yielded gold and other treasures that give us a glimpse into the lives of these ancient Greeks. The ruins probably date from as early as 1450 BCE. All of these pictures were taken in mid-September 2006 when I visited Mykenai.
