An island in the southern Aigean (Aegean) Sea.
Ios has the distinction of being the burial site of Homer, the greatest Greek poet in antiquity. Despite his notoriety, nothing is known about Homer's origins, his travels or even is family name.
Even though there is a lack of information as to Homer's birth and travels, there seemed to be little doubt that he died and was buried on the island of Ios. To commemorate that fact, the people of Ios erected a plaque which said, "Here the earth conceals that sacred head, adorner of warrior heroes, the godly Homer."
