A city on the island of Krete.
During the Trojan War, Idomeneus, Achaian commander of the Kretans, mustered soldiers from Knosos, Gortys, Lykastos, Lyktos, Miletos, Phaistos, and Rhytion. Meriones was second in command of the Kretans; he and Idomeneus were cousins and both were buried at Knosos.
Prior to the reign of the Olympian gods, the Titans had their dwellings in the land about Knosos.
The god Hephaistos crafted a shield for Achilles with an animated Dancing Floor reminiscent of the one the master builder Daidalos constructed in Knosos for Princess Ariadne, daughter of King Minos.
