Menelaos, co-commander of the Achaian army at Troy, mustered soldiers from the Lakedaimon cities of Messe, Amyklai, Augeiai, Bryseiai, Helos, Laas, Oitylos, Pharis, and Sparta. Messe was referred to as the haunt of doves.
