Sangarios River
Sangarius River

A river in Phrygia.

Observing the Achaian (Achaean) army from the walls of Troy, Trojan King Priam said the Achaian soldiers outnumbered the vast army of the Phrygians when they fought the Amazon1 warriors on the banks of the Sangarios River. The confrontation with the Amazons took place at an unspecified time before the Trojan War.

Asios (Asius), the brother of Trojan Queen Hekabe (Hecabe), came to Troy from his home in Phrygia on the banks of the Sangarios River.

The Sangarios is now known as the Sakarya River.

1. Amazons—a society of female warriors reputed to be daughters of Ares, god of war, and the nymph, Harmonia.
